Fiat On-Ramps and Off-Ramps: The Doors Between Pounds and Crypto
The unglamorous but essential infrastructure that lets money actually cross between your bank account and the crypto economy, and where the friction and fees tend to hide.

An on-ramp is any service that converts regular currency, pounds, into cryptocurrency. An off-ramp does the reverse, converting crypto back into pounds you can actually spend or hold in a bank account. Every crypto holding that started as money from a bank account passed through an on-ramp, and most people will eventually need an off-ramp too.
The most common on-ramps
UK-registered exchanges accepting debit card, bank transfer or open banking payments are the standard route, alongside a smaller number of specific peer-to-peer platforms and, less commonly now than in crypto's earlier years, physical crypto ATMs, which the FCA has taken an increasingly firm regulatory stance against in the UK.

Why fees and spreads matter more here than they first appear
On-ramp costs aren't always a clean, single fee, card payments typically carry a higher percentage charge than bank transfer, and the exchange rate offered often includes a spread beyond the headline market price, meaning the effective cost of getting into crypto can be meaningfully higher than the advertised fee alone suggests.
Off-ramping has its own specific friction
Withdrawal limits, verification requirements, and processing times vary significantly between platforms, and a platform under financial stress has, in some well-documented cases, delayed or frozen withdrawals specifically when users most wanted to off-ramp, which is precisely the counterparty risk that comes with using a centralised on/off-ramp provider at all.
A practical habit worth building
Understand your specific platform's off-ramp process, and its limits and typical timeframes, before you actually need to use it under pressure, not for the first time during a moment of market stress when speed genuinely matters and account verification delays are at their most frustrating.
A reminder
The FCA risk warning still applies to higher-risk crypto content. Always assess how much risk you are willing to take before buying.
